MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private land-grant research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was established in 1861. The institute has played a major role in the development of modern science, engineering, mathematics, and technology.

It is famous for its scientific and technological training and research. It was chartered by the state of Massachusetts in 1861 and became a land-grant college in 1863. William Barton Rogers was the founder and first president of MIT which was founded in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States. MIT is chartered as a non-profit organization. The institute is owned and governed by a privately appointed board of trustees known as the MIT Corporation.

MIT has five schools- Science, Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Management, and Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and one college- Schwarzman College of Computing.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY

Harvard University, a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts was established in 1636. Situated in the United States of America, Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning. It was named for its first benefactor, clergyman John Harvard.

The main university campus lies along the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a few miles west of downtown Boston.  The total enrolment of Harvard is about 23,000. STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Stanford University, officially named Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private research university in Stanford, California, US.  Stanford was founded by Leland and Jane Stanford in 1885 in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever. It opened in 1891.
Stanford maintains overseas study centers in France, Italy, Germany, England, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Japan, and Russia. The university offers a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs in schools of law, medicine, education, engineering, business, earth sciences, and humanities and sciences. Its total enrolment exceeds 16,000. One of the world’s premier laboratories for research in particle physics is the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC), established in 1962.

Stanford is generally ranked among the best universities in the world by academic publications. It is also one of the top fundraising institutions in the country, becoming the first school to raise more than a billion dollars in a year.

YALE UNIVERSITY

Yale University is a private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut. It was founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School. Yale is the third oldest university in the United States.

It was originally chartered by the colonial legislature of Connecticut as the Collegiate School and was held at Killingworth and other locations. It was renamed Yale College in 1718 to honour the school’s largest private benefactor for the first century of its existence, Elihu Yale.

The university is organized into fourteen constituent schools. The President and Fellows of Yale College, also known as the Yale Corporation, or board of trustees, governs the university and consists of thirteen standing committees with separate responsibilities outlined in the by-laws.

Yale is highly selective in its admissions and is among the nation’s most highly rated schools in terms of academic and social prestige. It includes Yale College (undergraduate), the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and 12 professional schools.

DUKE UNIVERSITY

Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina, US. It was founded by Methodists and Quakers in the town of Trinity (presently) in 1838. The school was moved to Durham in 1892.

It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church but not controlled by it. The institution was initially incorporated as an academy. It was reorganized as Normal College in 1851, then changed its name to Trinity College in 1859, and moved to Durham in 1892.

University’s total enrolment is approximately 14,000. Notable campus facilities include Duke University Chapel, with its Gothic-style 210-foot tower; the Duke Lemur Center, focusing on prosimian research; the Nasher Museum of Art, containing displays of Greek and Roman antiquities, medieval sculpture, and American and European paintings; and Sarah P. Duke Gardens, which includes a large section devoted to East Asian flora.

Duke was ranked 5th in the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings in 2021, having risen five places in the past year.
