The distinctions between this and the iPhone 14 Pro are huge, so it’s a fair question. Last year, the 120Hz ProMotion display on the iPhone 13 Pro made it stand out even more. Still, the differences used to be smaller and more clear-cut. For example, they used to focus on things like camera features while preserving some core specs.
This time, Apple has made the difference between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro much clearer by making it harder for the iPhone 14 to make any real progress. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad phone, but if you compare it to the iPhone 13, which is still in Apple’s phone lineup, you might want to save some money.
Price: iPhone 14 Vs iPhone 13
The starting price for the iPhone 14 stays at $799, which is what the rumor mill said to expect. The iPhone 14 Plus, which is bigger, costs $100 more and starts at $899. In the UK and EU, the price of the iPhone 14 has increased by £70 and €100, which is disappointing. Even so, you can now pre-order the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus from Apple.com. The 14 is available now, and the 14 Plus will be available on October 7.
Design: iPhone 14 Vs. iPhone 13
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have some changes to how they look, but the standard 14 is more similar. This means that the display notch will be the same as in previous generations, as will the size and layout of the camera array on the bump.
Of course, one big difference is the larger iPhone 14 Plus model, which replaces the iPhone mini and gives the Pro Max a big-screen midrange alternative. So, the design of the iPhone 14 is a case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” However, after two generations of the same look, we would have liked to see at least some changes, like the “pill-and-hole” design of the Pro, to shake things up a bit.
The iPhone 14 is 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches and weighs 6.07 ounces, which is the same size but slightly lighter than the iPhone 13, which means it should fit in your current case. At 6.33 x 3.07 x 0.31 inches and 7.16 ounces, it’s clear that the Max is bigger and heavier.
Display: iPhone 14 Vs. iPhone 13
Apple is projected to its guns and keeps the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display from the iPhone 13 with 1,200-nit peak brightness, HDR, a wide color gamut, Haptic Touch, and the same 60Hz refresh rate.
I get that the touch sampling rate and smoothness of the iOS graphical interface make this the smoothest 60Hz out there, but now that 120Hz is common in phones that cost a lot less than this one, this is no longer acceptable. The new thing is the iPhone 14 Plus, which has the same 6.7-inch screen as the Pro Max iPhone but the same slower refresh rate.
Processor: iPhone 14 Vs. iPhone 13
The chipset has been a controversial topic of conversation for a while now. There were rumors that Apple would stick with its old A15 Bionic chipset, while the Pro would get the cutting-edge A16 Bionic chipset. The rumors were mostly true, meaning this is the first year new iPhone models will have different parts.
As you may have seen in our iPhone 13 review and other articles over the past year, the A15 Bionic is a monster of a smartphone chip. It has great power, good graphics, and good power management. Also, this version of the chip is used in the iPhone 13 Pro, which means you get an extra GPU core and up to 25% better graphics performance. But if the A16 Bionic Geekbench results for the iPhone 14 Pro are any indication, the differences won’t matter much in real life.
Cameras: iPhone 14 Vs. iPhone 13
The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 have dual 12MP sensors with a standard wide lens and an ultra-wide lens. The same sensor shift technology is utilized on the primary sensor, and the same 100% focus pixels are utilized to produce photographs with high clarity.
However, some of the most important differences are small hardware changes and better software for taking photos. First, the main camera sensor has smaller pixels (1.9 microns) and the same f/1.5 aperture as the iPhone 13 Pro.
Sec, the 12MP selfie camera now has an f/1.9 aperture, which makes it better for taking photos in low light. And third, Apple will bring over the Photonic engine technology from the iPhone 14 Pro. This puts the Deep Fusion earlier in the software’s job when taking a picture, which makes it up to 2.5 times better in low light.
I would have liked to see progress in this area, like how the 14 Pro has more megapixels. But, as I said up top, Apple wants to use the fact that you haven’t said much to get you to buy the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. But, as our reviews make clear, Apple’s camera system is great, and when paired with some great software photography, it can take great photos in most situations.
Battery Life: iPhone 14 Vs. iPhone 13
The increase in use time discussed at the event is in line with the battery capacity going from 3,240mAh to 3,279mAh, which is a small but welcome change. The iPhone 14 Plus, which is bigger, has a battery that is much bigger than that. It can last up to 25% longer than the iPhone 13. A video of the iPhone 14 Pro Max being taken apart shows that the battery has shrunk, but we’ll have to wait to see what’s inside the regular iPhone 14.
Conclusion
When you look at the specs, it’s harder than ever to sell the newest iPhone. Even though there are some small updates, the number of things that are the same has grown significantly since a similar CPU was added to the mix. When you think about why this is happening, the word inflation comes to mind, but you can’t help but feel bad about what is an iPhone 13 with new skin and a few small improvements.
